December Library Lesson with Fact and Opinion
During the last month of the year, we know that the days are getting shorter, but SCHOOL days sure seem long, don’t they?! For my holiday tip, I’m sharing a December resource that I use to review fact and opinion. This resource is called December Days, and it can be used in three different ways:
— You can project the slides and lead a whole-group discussion.
— You can set up task cards in a library center.
— Or, you can use it as a SCOOT game. (Directions included.)
When I use this resource for a whole group discussion, we review each slide together:
⭐ For each “fact,” I help my students brainstorm many ways that they might be able to “prove” the answer. Then, I model how we could also use proof like online resources, nonfiction books, and so on.
⭐ For the “opinions,” we really get into WHY the displayed sentence is an opinion instead of a fact. This is a good time to talk about words like bias, persuasion, and point of view.
⭐ Because this resource has a fun “December Days” theme, the colorful slides depict scenes of cold, and sometimes, snowy days, drinking hot cocoa, and reading favorite holiday stories. Plus, there’s a little Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Hanukkah thrown in to create a good mix!
