New Year’s Library Lesson on Growth Mindset for January
Happy New Year! I hope 2018 brings faith, good health, lots of love, and plenty of grace to you and yours. Here’s to sharing many beautiful books with kids… like this one by Ashley Spires. I’ve just added a TPT library lesson on growth mindset that pairs perfectly for talking about New Year’s resolutions in January — or for sharing encouragement throughout the year.
BOOK TALK / THE THING LOU COULDN’T DO – Lou’s friends are planning to play pirates. (ARGGHHH… yes!! Lou can’t wait!) Until… she hears that her friends think the huge tree in her yard would make the perfect pirate ship. Gulp. Now, Lou is usually a pretty brave gal… but climbing trees?? Especially that HUGE tree?? Well, that’s a hard pass. Or is it? Lou hates to feel left out…should she risk it?
This story is one that all kids can relate to when a difficult task is looming. Its theme is perfect for discussing growth mindset ANY time of the year. I’ve created a set of discussion prompt cards so your students can group up and analyze Lou’s dilemma.
Afterwards — my resource printables will keep your students happily occupied while book exchange is going on. There’s an easy list-making task for your littles (things they can’t do YET) and a crossword puzzle for the older crowd. Just the thing for right after winter break!
Oh… and to squeeze a little extra out of this resource — I made it in TWO versions for you. One set will be perfect for an after New Year’s library lesson… or you can save it as an “any day” version later in the year instead.
